Microsoft is building tool for spotting bias in AI algorithms

Earlier this month, Facebook announced a tool called Fairness Flow that would automatically issue a warning if the artificial intelligence makes biased judgments about individuals based on their gender, race or age. And now, new reports suggest that Microsoft might be working on a tool of its own to spot biases in a range of different AI algorithms. Although Microsoft's new tool might not help in eliminating the biases that might creep in AI systems entirely, it will help in catching more instances of of unfairness, Rich Caruna, a senior researcher at Microsoft who is working on the company's bias-detection tool, told MIT Technology Review. This sudden surge in the use of AI-based programs has kicked off a race where these tech giants are selling off-the-shelf machine-learning technology which can be accessed via cloud-based services.
