Health board's chilling warning to EVERY patient after security breach: assume your data was hacked
Daily MailA Scottish health board has warned everyone in its area to assume that some of their data has been published online after its IT system was hacked. Officials confirmed that ‘over three terabytes of data’ was published by the hackers following February’s cyber attack, when a ‘substantial amount of patient and staff-identifiable data’ was stolen. ‘This leaflet sets out the type of data which was stolen, potential risks associated with this, the measures which you might want to consider taking in response, and information on how we can support you.’ The document also confirms that ‘millions of pieces of data’ were copied and published including X-rays, test results and correspondence between departments and to patients, as well as letters of complaint. The stolen data was leaked on the so-called ‘dark web’ on May 6, six weeks after the gang threatened to make the information available unless the health board met its demands. The leaflet will add: ‘As our investigations are ongoing, we will not be able to tell people what specific data has been published about them.’ Cyber experts previously called the amount of data stolen ‘unfathomable’ and feared the published information could be used to commit identity fraud.
