Pangolins are shy, solitary mammals found in parts of Asia and Africa, known for their unique covering of protective scales. "Between 2016 and 2019, there were 206 tonnes of pangolin scales seized globally … So to put that in context, we're talking over 400,000 pangolins seized in a four year period," Carmody tells ABC RN's Saturday Extra. Carmody says the "absolutely fantastic" Nigeria Customs Service's Wildlife Crime Unit was then able to quickly mobilise a team and raid the man's home. Last year, Carmody and the team tracked three Vietnamese men — major players in the illegal wildlife trade — as they travelled to Nigeria to source pangolin scales, working with a Guinean man. 'A massive impact' Carmody says when he started work with the WJC his "mind was blown" at the scale of illegal activities in wildlife, timber and fisheries crime.
