The Palestinian militant group Hamas said on 31 July 2024, its political leader Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike in Iran and vowed the act "will not go unanswered" Israel had pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s 7 October attack on southern Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. It came less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria killed two Iranian generals, marking the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
