Students should not return home if there is an outbreak at their university, Government says
The TelegraphStudents should not return home if there is an outbreak at their university in order to avoid spreading coronavirus around the country, the Government has said. Please, for the sake of your education, for your parents’ and your grandparents’ health, wash your hands, cover your face, make space, and don’t socially gather in groups of more than six now and when term starts.” Boris Johnson said that opening universities is “critical” for students’ life chances and that the health risks to individuals are low, but added: “Of course many university students are in the age bracket where we have seen the infection rates rise recently.” Cases among 20-29 year olds are rising the most steeply out of all age groups, according to data from Public Health England which shows that the weekly incidence of cases in this age group is 41.6 per 100,000. "The Prime Minister cannot in good conscience tell students to go back to university when he knows more outbreaks are likely and that would result in them being locked down hundreds of miles from home," said Jo Grady, general secretary of the University and College Union. “Of course one concern for all of us is off-campus behaviour and I think we are all imposing quite strict codes of practice with sanctions if students do not adhere to those.” Her remarks follow suggestions from officials that universities could be closed in the event of outbreaks of coronavirus amid warnings of soaring cases among young people.
