Christmas party advice: What do I do if I'm not drinking?

Slate

is Slate’s advice column on addiction, recovery, and how to hate yourself less. Dear A.J., I’m about to enter my first sober “silly season”. I generally like to surround myself with supportive people who respect my recovery and want me to stay sober, but I’m still fearful of this Christmas period and going to pubs or parties where all this craziness is going to be occurring. After our usual morning session of group therapy, about 20 of us hopped in the sad-ass rehab van and were taken to a giant AA clubhouse complete with a couple hundred of Florida’s finest recovering alcoholics, some of whom were also still in inpatient facilities.
