Gyanvapi was a temple and will remain so, says Banaras Hindu University professor on mosque survey report
India TodayAmid the controversy surrounding the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Historian and Banaras Hindu University professor Rajiv Srivastava said that Gyanvapi was a temple and will remain so, adding that what will the court decide when ample evidence has been found already. While speaking to India Today about the mosque survey report findings, Srivastava claimed that Mughal ruler Aurangzeb had ordered the demolition of the temple, on the top of which the mosque has been built. According to the historian and BHU Professor Rajiv Srivastava, “The Quran states that no pictures or artwork can be made inside the mosque, adding that in Hinduism, we have a symbol of everything, whether it is a snake or a lotus.” Srivastava claimed that a structure was made over the Shivling to conceal it. Last month, a Varanasi court ordered a videographed survey of the Gyanvapi Masjid complex after the five Hindu women filed pleas.
