How much koala habitat is cleared for mining and renewable energy projects each year?
ABCKoalas are often in the middle of campaigns against development involving land clearing. ABC Science analysed development projects seeking federal permission from 2012 until June 30 2024 to breakdown how much koala habitat has already been approved for clearing — and how much is currently in proposals under assessments in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, where the koala is considered endangered under national environment law. If these proposals go ahead, renewable energy will become responsible for 13,888 hectares of koala habitat clearing — 42 per cent of the proposed habitat loss. The mining sector runs a close second, with 11,735.6 hectares slated for clearing — about 37 per cent of proposed koala habitat loss. "There are a number of renewable energy projects proposed in threatened species habitat in Queensland, most of which include koala habitat," she said.
