His nerves racing the morning before his first NHL playoff game, Jesse Puljujarvi got on his phone and turned to a trusted confidante. Case in point: Puljujarvi’s Oilers teammates sang “Happy Birthday” to him during the post-practice stretch when he turned 23 two weeks ago. “In the Finnish league, you can’t really stop him,” Kunyk said. “But when you see it at practice — when it’s free, and you’re not worried about anything — then you get to see what the player’s potential really is.” Now, with the Game 1 showing serving as the latest and greatest example, Puljujarvi is turning potential into reality when the lights are the brightest. “He can make an impact every night — not just because of who he’s playing with,” Kunyk said.
