Farmers win $600k payout under Australian consumer law after canola seeds died before harvest

In short: Canola farmers in WA have reached a $600,000 agreement with Pacific Seeds after some of their seed died mid season. Australian Consumer Law provides powers to the commissioner for Consumer Protection in WA to help people who work in an agricultural, apicultural, pastoral, horticultural, orchards or other farming areas with redress claims. Canola seed is small, but expensive WA's unique redress options WA Commissioner for Consumer Protection Trish Blake said her department had helped negotiate the canola seed settlement, which was in excess of $600,000 and involved numerous farming properties. "Another nice thing about the Australian consumer law is that if you get multiple minor faults, that is called a major fault." She said for 'big ticket' items, Australian consumer law's expectation for a product to last for a reasonable period of time often extended beyond a manufacture's warranty.
