Starmer fails to guarantee future of Tempest fighter jet project

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted Britain’s next generation Tempest fighter jet project is “important” to Labour – but stopped short of guaranteeing it will continue. Luke Pollard, the Armed Forces minister, last week failed to offer a firm commitment to fund the project while the strategic defence review ordered by Sir Keir is ongoing. The sixth-generation Tempest fighter jet, which is due to take to the skies by 2035, is being developed jointly by Britain, Italy and Japan. “It is an important programme and I know that people in the room will want to hear me say that,” he said when asked if its future was “on the table” during the review.
