Syria rebel fighters raced into Damascus unopposed, overthrowing Assad and ending nearly six decades of his family's iron-fisted rule after a lightning advance that reversed the course of a 13-year civil war. Assad left country, gave orders to transfer power peacefully: Russia Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had left Syria after negotiations with rebel groups, and gave 'instructions' to 'transfer power peacefully'. Russia has waged a military campaign in Syria since September 2015, teaming up with Iran to allow Assad's government to fight armed opposition groups and reclaim control over most of the country.
