Govt hikes import duty on select communication items to up to 20% to check widening CAD
The CAD widened to 2.4 percent of the GDP in the first quarter of 2018-19. New Delhi: The government Thursday hiked the import duty on certain communication items, including base stations, to up to 20 percent as part of efforts to check a widening current account deficit by curbing imports. Import duty on populated, loaded or stuffed printed circuit boards of all goods other than mobile phones, base station and optical transport equipments has been raised to 10 percent. Duty has also been raised to 20 percent from 10 percent for base stations and for machines for the reception, conversion and transmission or regeneration of voice, images or other data, including switching and routing apparatus other than modems, voice frequency telegraphy, digital loop carrier systems and multiplexers, it said. The government had on 26 September doubled the import duty on 19 items, including air conditioners, household refrigerators and washing machines, to 20 percent.
