ICSI 101: A fertility expert answers FAQs about this cutting edge treatment

When it comes to assisted reproductive technology, especially in-vitro fertilisation, the science has jumped ahead by leaps and bounds—giving millions who might not have been able to conceive otherwise the joy of becoming a parent. “ICSI or intracytoplasmic sperm injection is an assisted fertilisation technology that has come as a boon to couples with poor sperm parameters like low sperm count, low sperm motility, and low normal forms of sperm,” explains Dr Richa. Talking about traditional IVF, Dr. Richa says: “IVF or in-vitro fertilisation just refers to a technique by which the egg is fertilised outside the body as against the natural process of in the body.” Conventional IVF is offered to patients who have tubal blocks or other forms of infertility—where the sperm parameters are nearly normal. “ICSI has opened new arenas of fertility treatment and is the treatment of choice for those with severe sperm parameters,” suggests Dr Richa. However, the choice of IVF or ICSI is best left to the fertility specialist and the embryologist,” recommends Dr. Richa.
