High in the air, above southern Western Australia, flies the state's first line of defence against bushfires. "We let the district office know we see any smoke and keep a good eye out," Ms Prinsloo said. Fire spotter planes are among the first line of defence against bushfires in Western Australia. "It takes getting used to … looking for smoke because it's small at first, which is when we want to find them," Ms Prinsloo said. The season has kept spotter crews busy, with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services warning residents to be vigilant of autumn bushfires with dry conditions still across large tracts of the state.
