There was always going to be work still to be done at St James’ Park, but Newcastle had the chances to be heading back to the North East with a far bigger advantage. Newcastle were the better side but nearly threw it away and needed two excellent saves from goalkeeper Nick Pope to stop them doing so. “We started well, we created chances we should have taken but it got very tight and we needed two very important saves from Nick Pope in the second half.
