FA Cup 2024-25: Why is there no VAR in the fourth round?

Harry Maguire’s controversial late goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round once again highlighted the absence of Video Assistant Referee. With VAR not in use in the fourth round, Maguire’s sucker punch knocked the Foxes out of the competition, leaving Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy furious. Video Assistant Referees will only be used in the 2024-25 Emirates FA Cup from the fifth round onwards, the FA has confirmed in a statement. “VAR has previously only been used in the Emirates FA Cup for matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, workforce, and costs required for its operation.
