Federal Government calls for site nominations for nuclear waste dump
ABCLandowners have a chance to nominate their property to become Australia's first nuclear waste dump and states and territories will not be able to veto the decision, under a process begun by the Federal Government. Federal Industry and Science Minister Ian Macfarlane said the process for voluntary site nominations for a national radioactive waste management facility had begun and would remain open until May 5. A spokeswoman for Mr Macfarlane said if a freehold landowner put forward a site to become a nuclear waste dump states or territories would not have veto powers, but the Government did not want to impose its decision without consultation. The statement from Mr Macfarlane's office said once the nominations were complete and a preferred site was identified, the Government would engage with the nearest community and discuss a package of benefits of the potential construction and "operational requirements".
