The country has been witnessing a downward trend in the reported infections since the last two days with 572 fresh cases recorded on Tuesday, as per the data published by Union health ministry. There number of daily cases had dropped to double digits till December 5, but with the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions, cases have gone up again. The World Health Organisation classified the new variant, JN.1 as a separate "variant of interest" given its rapidly-increasing spread, but said it poses a "low" global public health risk. On Tuesday, India logged a total of 312 cases of Covid-19 with JN.1 variant, with about 47 per cent of them recorded in Kerala, as per the INSACOG's data.
