
1,170 notices served for illegal discharge of sewage into Vembanad, Ashtamudi lakes
The HinduA total of 1,170 notices have been served on industrial units, apartment complexes, houseboats and hotels located close to Vembanad and Asthamudi lakes for violation of norms under the Water Act, 1974, according to official estimates. The erring units either did not have valid consent issued by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board to operate a treatment facility or lacked a sewage treatment plant as per norms. It included consent withdrawal intention notices issued to around 624 houseboats; 112 closure intention notices and 54 show cause notices issued to units including peeling sheds/ resorts/ hotels for illegal discharge into the Vembanad lake. In Kottayam, notices were issued to 215 units including 106 houseboats and 109 apartments/ hotels/restaurants/auditorium/ lodge/ service station/ nursing homes.
