The digital leap
The HinduWhen she finished her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Chemistry and Botany, 21 year old Adithi Shenoy went online and signed up for a course on animal welfare and behaviour. Even a market research survey conducted by Talentedge reveals that around 43 percent of the students who opt for online courses come from the IT/BPO sector followed by 20 percent from business and finance fields. So, if one were to understand the space that online courses occupy in the Indian education system today, we realise that in their present structure, digital courses serve as skill enhancers and an addendum to the education system at best. This of course, is helped by the fact that universities have begun to recognise certificates from online courses and even corporates accept candidates based on their evaluation results on digital courses. “Shattering the myth that the best discussion or class participation happens in a ‘real’ classroom, we’ve actually observed that the best class participation, in terms of quality discussion, happens online because students find strength in the fact that they are ‘invisible’ to the teacher and therefore, speak their mind honestly.
