Flames GM Craig Conroy talks NHL trade deadline, organizational philosophy and more

New York Times

The central figure for the NHL’s 2024 trade deadline is likely to be Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy, who is sitting across from me in his Scotiabank Saddledome office, talking philosophy. It’s hard to know what they really are — a good team having a bad year, or a bad team that had a good year not long ago. Two, three years down the road, how is this team going to look — and who’s going to be here long-term and who’s going to be on a shorter term? Now, with everybody so tight against the cap, sure there are deals you’d like to make, but you can’t make it work unless you have to take back a certain player you don’t really want — and you think, “That doesn’t make any sense.” I know people making trades in fantasy sports, they can just make a deal and move on.
