Needless, unconstitutional: Mizoram slams Assam govt order on mandatory checking of incoming vehicles
India TodayThe Mizoram government on Friday slammed the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in Assam over its recent order enforcing mandatory checking of all vehicles entering Assam from the neighbouring state. "There have been instances of seizure of vehicles and arrest of persons carrying illicit drugs coming over from Assam to Mizoram but mandatory checking of every vehicle passing through Assam-Mizoram boundary had never been initiated by Government of Mizoram," the statement added. READ: Decoded | Assam-Mizoram border dispute: A row unresolved for almost 150 years Describing the latest decision by the Assam administration as "another way of creating opportunity to harass all vehicles and passengers from Mizoram by Assam police", the Mizoram government pointed out that there was no such restrictions on the movement of non-residents of Mizoram travelling within Mizoram. Terming it a global issue that cannot be solved by one state alone, the Mizoram government said that the illegal drug menace could be solved with better co-ordination between the two states instead of "threatening and harassing innocent civilians" without reason.
