India is 10-15 years behind most countries in traditional technologies, says DRDO chief
New Indian ExpressBENGALURU: “Today academia, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and the industry are working in silos with little overlap. We need to upgrade our infrastructure and pay our professors much higher.” Kamat also pointed out that India is at least 10-15 years behind most countries in traditional technologies, and with a focus on disruptive technology, the country can leapfrog and be on par with them. Referring to the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft -- a single-seat, twin-engine combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy -- Kamat said it will be delivered by 2028. Kamat also spoke about India’s growing appetite for risk and highlighted that the Ministry of Defence has approved the Technology Development Fund to be used for funding high-risk projects. DRDO’s plans include highendurance autonomous vehicles -- indigenous conventional submarines, infantry combat vehicles, robotic soldiers and more -- for the Armed Forces.
