Major storm outbreak over two days threatens Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Hobart
ABCAn explosive outbreak of spring thunderstorms are expected throughout much of eastern Australia over the next 48 hours, in areas including Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Hobart. Key points: Most of Australia will see or hear a thunderstorm in the second half of this week The most significant storm activity is expected across south-eastern parts of NSW There is also a modest risk of thunderstorms through the majority of Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory and northern WA The storms have the potential to become severe, and on Thursday, could even intensify into squall Iines and supercell thunderstorms in NSW. "No matter where you are in the country, there's a pretty good chance that you'll see or hear a thunderstorm through the second half of this week," Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said. "We're expecting the most significant storm activity across the south-eastern parts on Wednesday," Mr Hines said. "The thing that allows thunderstorms to turn into supercell thunderstorms is the wind profile through atmosphere, where you get changes in the wind speed and wind direction at various heights," Mr Hines said.
