Total Solar Eclipse in 2024 created gravity waves, ripples in Earth's atmosphere

India Today

Eclipses can generate ripples in Earth’s atmosphere called atmospheric gravity waves. Similar to how water forms waves when disturbed, air in the atmosphere reacts in the same way when influenced by a dramatic event like a solar eclipse. During the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, scientists observed the ionosphere — a charged layer in Earth’s upper atmosphere — rising in altitude during the eclipse and descending back to its normal height afterward. The Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project, which involved over 800 students across the US, confirmed the presence of these gravity waves by launching high-altitude balloons equipped with sensors.
