Music therapist Allison Davies says music therapy achieves outcomes and interest from GPs is growing
ABCWhen Allison Davies strums her guitar and sings a warm-up note, the mood of the room is immediately happier — and that is music therapy at its most basic level. "With neurological patients, even though they often can't speak they can often still sing and song lyrics are stored differently to other kinds of language," Ms Davies said. "Creating music, singing, participating in music, stimulates more areas of the brain simultaneously than other activity," Ms Davies said. Ms Davies is very keen to point out that it is not an alternative therapy and that most music therapists have to do a post-graduate course to acquire a Masters in Music Therapy. "I've had people ask me to come and talk to their medical clinic, discuss music therapy with their GPs and invited to talk at conferences."
