Federal government, Border Force promise extra resources to stop foreign boats arriving off NT coast

ABC

The federal government and Australian Border Force have moved to reassure the public more resources are being devoted to stop illegal boat arrivals off the Northern Territory coast, after an "unprecedented" increase in recent months. Senior Border Force personnel and federal Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke visited the Northern Territory on Wednesday to show off the newest addition to the agency's arsenal of surveillance planes and boats being used to protect Australia's northern border, as part of Operation Lunar. Border Force acting commander of Operation Lunar, Tracie Griffin, said the agency was "working with the government to seek extra funding" for additional capabilities. "The Albanese Government reduced the investment they were making into aerial surveillance and on water surveillance, of course you're going to see more boat arrivals," Mr Dutton said.
