Some four years ago, a wave of asylum seekers, among whom many Syrians, reached Western European shores to the reassuring noises of a few well-known Dutch personalities and various people in authority. It’s as if asylum seekers are small children without any responsibility of their own, whose inaction – there is no sanction on not working – is always someone else’s fault, usually the government’s. Instead of making ‘inburgering’ courses the main occupation of asylum seekers who have gained a residency permit, the focus should now be on finding work, Koolmees said.
