Tejashwi Yadav's battle for Bihar
India TodayOn July 5, when Tejashwi Yadav addressed Rashtriya Janata Dal members on the party’s 24th foundation day, he discussed the virtues of his father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, and described the “sacrifices” the RJD chief had made. From invoking his father’s “sacrifices” and contributions toward social justice to apologising for the “bhool ” made during the 15-year-long Lalu-Rabri regime, and from promising to win Delhi by 2035 to seeking a postponement of the state assembly polls, Tejashwi presents the image of a leader unsure of his stance, trying out a number of different appeals to identify the best strategy. In this, Modi took full advantage of the opening Tejashwi offered, saying that the RJD first family does not deserve a political pardon for Bihar’s “15 years of dark age.” THE COVID CHALLENGE Political experts believe that while there is a real possibility of a slump in voter turnout if the Covid situation does not improve, the RJD is unlikely to be the biggest loser. But with Lalu Prasad still in judicial custody, and unlikely to be released to campaign even virtually in the upcoming Bihar elections, the responsibility to fire the party’s engine also falls on Tejashwi’s shoulders.
