What is going on with Brexit during the coronavirus crisis?
The IndependentBecause everyone’s attention has switched from one all-consuming news story to another, it is hard to keep track of what is happening to Brexit. This is because the Ireland protocol of the withdrawal agreement said there would have to be checks on goods going between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, so that there could be an open border between Northern Ireland and the EU, that is, the Republic of Ireland. The protocol specified that there would have to be checks on goods arriving in Northern Ireland from Great Britain. What we still do not know is what the procedures will be for goods going in the other direction, from Northern Ireland to the rest of the UK. Thus Northern Ireland will remain for some purposes part of the EU single market, and new burdens will be imposed not just on trade between the UK and the EU, but on goods moving between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
