Engineering students to have NEET-like exams?

Soon, engineering courses may also have admissions based on a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and such tests may be conducted from 2019. All India Council for Technical Education Vice Chairman MP Poonia mentioned about such a proposal while addressing students at the 27th convocation held at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology in Semmencherry, Chennai, on Sunday. Earlier such proposals faced resistance This is not the first time that such a proposal has been put forward In 2017, AICTE was toying with the idea of introducing a common entrance exam for engineering students based on the lines of NEET However, since they faced opposition from several states, the HRD ministry decided against introducing the single-entrance exam In case NEET-like exams for engineering are implemented, all other engineering exams will be subsumed However, many state governments are apprehensive about the outcome of such exams especially in the light of controversies surrounding NEET exams. The state of Tamil Nadu is still against NEET for medical examinations Current basis of engineering admissions India has more than 3,300 approved colleges for engineering which are affiliated to universities These have an annual intake of approximately 1.6 million students But, only about half of the seats get filled Currently, multiple examinations are being conducted for engineering each year by centre, states and private institutions The CBSE conducts the JEE-Main for Centre-funded institutions A number of states conduct their own tests while some grant admission based on class 12 marks Several private colleges also have their own examinations Also read: This 15-year-old girl has built a rainwater harvesting system to quench the thirst of the homeless
