Kentucky picks up first 2024 commitment from 4-star Somto Cyril: What center’s pledge means for Wildcats

New York Times

Four-star center Somto Cyril committed to Kentucky on Wednesday but is likely to remain in the Class of 2024 after exploring the possibility of a reclassification to join the Wildcats this fall. Cyril’s per-game averages, playing half the OTE season on a loaded team featuring twin top-five NBA draft picks Amen and Ausar Thompson, were modest. Not the instant upgrade to a thin frontcourt that the Wildcats hoped — although that’s less urgent after Kentucky landed 6-foot-9, 240-pound West Virginia transfer Tre Mitchell on Monday. That means UK’s entire frontcourt is just three players: five-star freshman Aaron Bradshaw, who is dealing with a foot injury; sophomore center Ugonna Onyenso, who averaged 6.9 minutes in just 16 games last season; and Mitchell, the only proven college player of the bunch. Five-star freshman Justin Edwards and a muscled-up sophomore Adou Thiero, both 6-foot-7 wings, could help out at forward if needed, but there won’t be a bruiser on the block without Cyril.
