NFL Week 7 best and worst coaching decisions: Lions offense solves Brian Flores’ puzzle
New York TimesIt may seem like Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is a constant fixture on the positive side of this column, but he earns it as every week he attacks a new problem with creative, interesting and effective solutions. This week, the Lions did something a few offenses have been able to do: figure out coordinator Brian Flores’ Vikings defense. On Amon-Ra St. Brown’s 35-yard touchdown catch, the Lions used an old Bill Belichick protection scheme against the Vikings’ Cover 0 blitz. As former defensive back Dominique Foxworth, who played for the Broncos, explained in the clip above, when Belichick used this protection scheme against the Broncos in 2006, it didn’t work because they didn’t have a receiver who could pass block on edge defenders. Getting running back Joe Mixon back from injury last week has added some explosiveness to their offense, but they’re still one of the most inefficient running teams in the league.
