TRAI floats consultation paper on VoIP services including internet telephony

TRAI has asked stakeholders to comment on a number of key questions on introducing regulations, features and a numbering system to VoIP services. TRAI has issued a consultation paper on VoIP services, or internet telephony. To encourage internet telephony services in the country, issues such as allocation of telephone numbers, interconnection, interconnection usage charges and access to emergency service need to be addressed urgently,” TRAI said. However, TRAI notes that telecom service providers might be reluctant to introduce VoIP technologies to consumers, because they already provide a similar service over traditional networks. The issues raised are setting a licensing fees for internet service providers in case they are allowed to provide unrestricted VoIP services.
