HC issues directive to stop Punyam Poonkavanam project
The HinduA Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday asked the Travancore Devaswom Board not to continue with the implementation of the Punyam Poonkavanam project at Sabarimala, which has been put on hold for the last two years. The Bench led by Justice Anil K. Naredran made the observation while disposing of a suo motu case initiated on the basis of the report of the Sabarimala Special Commissioner regarding allegations of misappropriation of funds collected by the coordinator of the project. Ajith Kumar, who was the chief police coordinator at Sabarimala, was submitted before the High Court in a sealed cover. Punyam Poonkavanam project is a community policing programme implemented in Sabarimala since 2011 during the Mandalam-Makaravilakku festival seasons as part of the police bundobust scheme with an intention to keep the Sannidhanam, Pampa, Nilackal and its surroundings clean and hygienic throughout the season with the active participation and coordination of the pilgrims.
