Farewell to "The Phantom of the Opera," which welcomed outcasts

Salon

To be a musical theater kid in the days before "The Phantom of the Opera" was a dark time. "Phantom" premiered in 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, racking up "every major British theatre award," according to the Broadway League. With lyrics by Charles Hart and a libretto by Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe, "Phantom" is adapted from French writer Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel. "Phantom" showed us a different world, the one inside the mirror, the one inside ourselves.
