Ranya Rao's cop father under lens in smuggling case over airport protocol 'misuse'

The Karnataka government has launched a formal investigation into the alleged protocol violation at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, following the recent arrest of actor Ranya Rao in a gold smuggling case. The government also ordered an inquiry into the role of Ramachandra Rao, the stepfather of Ranya Rao and an IPS officer, in her being able to breach protocol at Bengaluru airport. In a Government Order, dated March 10, 2025, an IAS officer, Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta was appointed the investigating officer to probe the misuse of protocol facilities at the airport. As there were allegations that certain police personnel might have assisted or ignored protocol violations that enabled Ranya Rao to smuggle gold without detection, the CID inquiry will examine whether police officers escorted her through security checkpoints without proper screening.
