Steelers extend Minkah Fitzpatrick quickly, which could benefit Diontae Johnson
New York TimesPITTSBURGH — It was not a matter of whether Minkah Fitzpatrick was going to get a long-term extension from the Steelers; it was more a matter of how much and when. Fitzpatrick got $84.2 million, and Johnson now has the Steelers’ full attention until the team’s self-imposed deadline of Sept. 11 to negotiate contracts. Antonio Brown got a second deal only two years into his career after Mike Wallace balked at the five-year, $50 million offer the Steelers put on the table during camp in 2012. If not, the Steelers aren’t going to budge much off their offer — which is unknown but likely not a top-five proposal — and Johnson will play on an expiring contract. Fitzpatrick’s deal makes him the highest-paid safety in the league, reportedly includes a $36 million signing bonus and two fully guaranteed years, and will keep him with the Steelers through the 2026 season.
