Warmun painter Lena Nyadbi recognised as one of nation's most significant artists

ABC

A remote Aboriginal community in northern Western Australia is celebrating the work of one of its finest artists, internationally recognised painter Lena Nyadbi. Ms Nyadbi later recalled that as she stood on the tower's viewing deck surrounded by media and European art connoisseurs, and gazed down at her work, her only thoughts were of her home. Warmun Art Centre general manager Melissa Callanan said Ms Nyadbi was one of many acclaimed artists in the community. Ms Nyadbi cannot spend her final years on Gija country, because a series of bureaucratic bungles means an aged care home in Warmun remains closed, seven years after it was built.
