Pakistan has suffered its deadliest attack by the Baloch Liberation Army in years. Who is the group behind this assault?
ABCA policeman picks through charred vehicles on an isolated road in Pakistan's Balochistan province. The BLA came to the highway and stopped people for about half an hour … and then took them to an area about 100, 200 metres away from the road, and killed them brutally," Pakistan's Chief Minister of Balochistan, Sarfaraz Bugti, said. The BLA's attacks on Monday also marked an anniversary of the death of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Bugti, who was killed by Pakistani security forces in 2006. The BLA also claims to have been behind four suicide bombings in the southern port district of Gwadar, and an attack on Pakistan's Bela paramilitary base. The larger risk that will concern major powers, including Pakistan's erstwhile ally the United States, and China, is whether it will spark Pakistani cross-border raids into Iran, to target BLA positions.
