Man tells court alleged serial killer Steven Leslie Hainsworth 'hit' Stephen Newton after finding child exploitation material

A man has told a court that alleged serial killer Steven Leslie Hainsworth admitted to "hitting" a man who he is alleged to have killed after finding a disc containing child exploitation in his DVD player. Denise Irene Rankine, an acquaintance of Mr Hainsworth in 2011, said "Hainsy" had made several comments while news reports played on the television about Mr Newton's body being found. During cross-examination by Mr Fowler-Walker, Ms Rankine said she decided to provide a statement to police in late 2011 because it was "the right thing to do". Disc labelled 'four young girls' allegedly located at property Detective Brevet Sergeant Brett John Carpenter, who was working in Mount Gambier at the time of Mr Newton's alleged murder, said he went into the man's unit after reports a suspicious disc had been discovered. Body covered in furniture and branches Brevet Sergeant Carpenter said the word "pedo", or something similar, was seen to be painted on the wall of Mr Newton's house.
