Twitter cites new reason for delay in appointing compliance officer

Twitter on Wednesday said it was setting up a local office as advised by consultants in India, leading to a delay in appointing a compliance officer as per the new IT rules. Government sources said that Twitter lost legal protection in India over its failure to appoint statutory officers in line with the new IT rules. The new law requires tech companies in India, including WhatsApp, Facebook, Google and others to appoint a chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer in the country. A cyber law expert said, “With the legal cover provided by Section 79 of the Information Technology Act gone, Twitter employees starting from its head in India will be held liable for any post on the platform that violates any law of the land.”
