German Snap Election 2025 Live Updates: The conservative CDU/CSU is projected to lead the new German parliament with around 29 per cent of the vote, positioning Friedrich Merz as the frontrunner for chancellor. Germany’s conservative election frontrunner Friedrich Merz promised Saturday in his last rally before Sunday’s elections that if he takes power he will be a “strong voice in the European Union”. Germany may face months of political instability following the election, as opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s CDU group, which is well ahead in surveys, will almost surely need to join a coalition to achieve a majority. The centre-right Christian Democrats are projected to win Germany’s 2025 federal election, securing 30 per cent of the vote and 220 seats in the 630-seat Bundestag, according to YouGov’s final MRP forecast released Friday. Before the election, Merz said that no agreement would be reached between Scholz’s centre-left party and the far-right Alternative for Germany, which is expected to overtake it as the country’s second-largest political force.
