Why T-Series, not PewDiePie, represents the future of YouTube

WIRED Thousands of printers were co-opted into the cause to keep PewDiePie top of YouTube. YouTube’s biggest name – who has been posting on the platform since 2010 – is at risk of being usurped by T-Series, an Indian record label and movie production company. T-Series had been producing music since 1984, and around 2009 it noticed lots of its music videos appeared on a fledgling video sharing site called YouTube, which had launched in India two years earlier. “Since then it’s been a history,” says Kalyan, who oversees eight staff members who manage the company’s social media presence, including the company’s scores of YouTube channels. On New Year’s Day 2018, T-Series had 31 million subscribers – around half the number PewDiePie did.
