England ready for penalties after working with psychologist on breathing and run-ups
The TelegraphEngland players have worked with a psychologist on breathing techniques and run-ups for taking penalties to prepare for their World Cup clash against Senegal going to a shootout on Sunday. Declan Rice says players have been practising with a “skills net” covering the goal apart from the corners to increase accuracy. “I feel like everyone has got a different technique, different run up, it is more about how you compose yourself in the moment and have a clear breath, a clear mind so you can hopefully put the penalty away.” England started researching penalty techniques nine years ago under Football Association technical director Dan Ashworth, whose data team gathered information on the walk to the penalty spot and the time players took after the referee blows his whistle. Southgate started implementing the finding and England won their first World Cup shootout four years ago, against Colombia.
