NHRC was established on October 12, 1993, under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, reflecting India's commitment to uphold and protect human rights. Lack of Independence in NHRC Secretary-General Appointment: SCA's Repeated Concerns- Section 11 of The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 allows the Indian government to choose a civil servant with the rank of Secretary to the Government as Secretary General of the NHRC of India.
