President Macron will host an emergency summit of European leaders in Paris today in an attempt to marshal a united response to the defence and security crisis now engulfing Europe. US Vice President JD Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference by warning that various official attacks on free speech across Europe, including in Britain, undermined the US-European shared commitment to freedom and democracy which justified the expensive American defence of Europe’s security. Just to leave Europe in no doubt that there was a new sheriff in town, Donald Trump’s envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, bluntly told America’s European allies that they would not be part of the Ukrainian peace talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia later this week.
