ANDREW NEIL: This is a watershed in Europe's history. For decades we have lavished billions on welfare and sent the bill for our defence to America - and Trump simply won't let that continue
Daily MailPresident Macron will host an emergency summit of European leaders in Paris today in an attempt to marshal a united response to the defence and security crisis now engulfing Europe. US Vice President JD Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference by warning that various official attacks on free speech across Europe, including in Britain, undermined the US-European shared commitment to freedom and democracy which justified the expensive American defence of Europe’s security. Just to leave Europe in no doubt that there was a new sheriff in town, Donald Trump’s envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, bluntly told America’s European allies that they would not be part of the Ukrainian peace talks between Russia and the US in Saudi Arabia later this week. US Vice President JD Vance stunned the Munich Security Conference by warning that various official attacks on free speech across Europe, including in Britain, undermined the US-European shared commitment to freedom and democracy The sentiments put forward by Vance are hardly new: they are just being more bluntly expressed, as is the Donald Trump way All of this has engendered a sense of panic across the chancelleries of Europe. Nato’s new secretary-general, Mark Rutte, argues European members need to spend at least 3 per cent of their GDP on defence and recognises they have not spent enough ‘over the last 40 years.’ Fair enough.
