Queensland Premier David Crisafulli reluctant to answer whether Schoolies pill testing will go ahead
ABCThe newly elected Queensland Premier has skirted questions on whether plans for pill testing at Schoolies will be scrapped. "We said we don't support pill testing and I'm not walking away from that but the question was asked about Schoolies which is in three weeks' time." "There's literally no evidence that pill testing increases drug consumption — pill testing has been going on for a quarter of a century elsewhere around the world, all the evidence points to the opposite," Dr Caldicott said. "The message that you're sending by blocking pill testing is that if we allow young people to die, it will dissuade them from consuming drugs, and I think that's back to front." "We know from this research that when young people go to festivals or venues that have pill testing available, they'll be more inclined to reduce their use if they are told that it's very potent, or to dispose of it if it's not what they actually thought it was going to be," Dr De Andrade said.
