How the far right got a stranglehold on the West
Al JazeeraIn the past, the rise of far-right ideology has surged ahead in Europe and the US in unison. Reflecting on this time in history – with the far right in focus – can show us a lot about the drivers of far-right politics not only in the US, but globally, today. Considering the far right at this time, what’s worth noting is that instead of “evil” individuals cheating, fooling or cajoling their fellow citizens, we see the rise of mass, popular movements. Can’t eradicate it, but sure can suppress it – with national welfare policies The end of World War II saw not only the start of a period of extended economic recovery, but of major political parties in Europe and the US implementing wide-sweeping, public policies on unions, healthcare and infrastructure. The administration of US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began some of these initiatives before the start of World War II in what together came to be known as the “New Deal”.
